Happy New Year 2019! See the Possibilities—Part 3
Last week we talked about picking one thing you want to do now and work toward it. Achieving a small goal early on will encourage you to reach for more. #HappyNewYear2019 #Lookforward #SeethePossibilities TWEETABLE
I talked about giving up cookies. I have. My husband is right. I can’t have them in the house. A couple weeks ago, I ran out of cookies and decided to not buy anymore. That was a bit difficult. I bet I spent a whole minute debating that internally. But I know myself, and so does he.
Our church calls for a fast every January. Last year, I was enabled to do a one-week water fast. I’d never done anything like that before. I’ve done a 40-day Daniel/Liquids fast, a lot of different fasts in the last 20 years, including 3-day fasts that were just liquid, two-week, 24-hour fasts, etc. This year, I’m doing a once a week liquid fast with other days alternating between one meal and two meals per day.
I’m only telling you this to encourage you to understand what fasting is about. It’s about drawing near to God. In His word, (James 4:8), it says, “Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you hypocrites.”
My goal this year is to get off sugar and to control my eating. Two years ago, I lost 33 pounds without trying…because of the flu and teeth problems. I’ve put half of that back on. Last year during that one week fast, I lost 13 pounds. I put all of that back on plus 15 more. Yikes!
That’s why I’m withdrawing from sugar. Another tool I’m using is to write down everything I’m eating. I’ve done that before, and it really works well. Over the course of a day, you see how much you’re stuffing in your mouth if you do this. It helped me two years ago, and I’m expecting it to help me again. I’m going to do it for longer this year. At least six months—hopefully by that time, my eating habits will have totally changed.
