They say never to get involved in politics unless you have a thick skin. Oh wait! They say about writing, too. Well, I did dabble in politics for a short time in the 90s. In an election, there are always winners and losers. The key is to be involved, and if you win, great. But you have to move on if you lose. In every scene, there is a place where something happens, and the scene turns. That’s the focal point. It can be at the beginning, the middle, or at the end of a scene. But it’s in there somewhere. You just have to find it. Are your scenes circular? Meaning, do you feel you’re writing in circles? If they are, you need to find the focal point. “Drums keep pounding rhythm to the brain. La-di-da-da-di, la di da di die.” Like an old Sonny & Cher song called, “The Beat Goes On,” every scene must have and include “beats.” Different than a song rhythm, beats are necessary to round out your scenes. Last week, we learned that a scene is and has––action. Action is what happens. Every scene should have an impactful event that occurs during it. As the story progresses, each scene adds its contribution to the overall tale, to make an event. I read somewhere that scenes are the “guts” of your novel. They are powerful and intense, they engage readers and help them to keep on reading. What is a scene? It is the most vivid and immediate part of the story, emotionally involved, their minds are filled with images and memories of actions. Click to Tweet #amwriting #scintillatingscenes
Simply put, a scene is action! Scenes are text passages, including narrative, meant to focus on an event in the story, sometimes slowing it down, so that the reader is “in the moment.” The readers join in the scene along with the characters in action.

For five years, from the time I was a senior in high school, until I graduated from ORU, I had few rejection incidents. Then I graduated, and couldn’t get a job in my chosen field of broadcasting. Today’s job market is more sophisticated than the 1970s. Networking is rapidly becoming the best way to secure a professional position.
