Writing Scintillating Scenes––Part V

I’ve talked about tension before, but it’s part of building scenes, so let’s look at it again. We’ll look at both building and releasing tension. Tension brings intensity to a scene and draws the reader in. Click to Tweet #amwriting #scintillatingscenes
APD Part XII––Politics

They say never to get involved in politics unless you have a thick skin. Oh wait! They say about writing, too. Well, I did dabble in politics for a short time in the 90s. In an election, there are always winners and losers. The key is to be involved, and if you win, great. But you have to move on if you lose. An election loss to a person with rejection issues hurts like a dagger in the heart. Click to Tweet #amwriting #rejection #APD

In every scene, there is a place where something happens, and the scene turns. That’s the focal point. It can be at the beginning, the middle, or at the end of a scene. But it’s in there somewhere. You just have to find it. Are your scenes circular? Meaning, do you feel you’re writing in circles? If they are, you need to find the focal point. The focal point in a scene is where something happens. Click to Tweet #amwriting #scintillatingscenes
APD Part XI––You’re Fired, Part II

I so enjoyed giving a break to all my negative APD stuff by talking about what’s happening now. I’ll do that again soon. Getting fired from a job with APD is tantamount with being rejected as a human being. Click to Tweet #amwriting #rejection #APD

“Drums keep pounding rhythm to the brain. La-di-da-da-di, la di da di die.” Like an old Sonny & Cher song called, “The Beat Goes On,” every scene must have and include “beats.” Different than a song rhythm, beats are necessary to round out your scenes. We’ll look at them, how to structure your scenes around them, and how the different elements richly add to your scenes and stories. Click to Tweet #amwriting #scintillatingscenes
We Interrupt This Series…

Nowadays, television is only interrupted by special news, disasters, or an emergency. This break is for something wonderful. In the past month, I have received so much emotional healing in rejection, and I know it will continue. Healing comes in a multitude of ways, not the least of which is learning your roots. Last week, we learned that a scene is and has––action. Action is what happens. Every scene should have an impactful event that occurs during it. As the story progresses, each scene adds its contribution to the overall tale, to make an event. Scene events don’t always need to be spectacular, but must be meaningful and interesting, moving the story along. Click to Tweet #amwriting #scintillatingscenes Read More

Last week, I alluded to a series of job failures from the time I graduated college. I was in grad school when the first occurred. Misunderstandings and miscommunications in the workplace are a symptom of APD. Click to Tweet #amwriting #rejection #APD

Writing Scintillating Scenes––Part I

I read somewhere that scenes are the “guts” of your novel. They are powerful and intense, they engage readers and help them to keep on reading. What is a scene? It is the most vivid and immediate part of the story, emotionally involved, their minds are filled with images and memories of actions. Click to Tweet #amwriting #scintillatingscenes
Simply put, a scene is action! Scenes are text passages, including narrative, meant to focus on an event in the story, sometimes slowing it down, so that the reader is “in the moment.” The readers join in the scene along with the characters in action.
APD Part IX––And So it Begins

For five years, from the time I was a senior in high school, until I graduated from ORU, I had few rejection incidents. Then I graduated, and couldn’t get a job in my chosen field of broadcasting. Today’s job market is more sophisticated than the 1970s. Networking is rapidly becoming the best way to secure a professional position.
