God’s Special Effects—Part IV

How does God speak to you? For me, He speaks to my heart through the Bible, and directly to my spirit. It’s that “still, small voice” inside me. It can be like a running dialogue, or just a word or two with the instruction of “write this down.” So, I grab my journal, pick up a pen, and write.  #GodsSpecialEffects #SpiritualGifts #SuperBowl2018

Cut it out! Pare it down. Weed out unnecessary words. Instead of a long, flowery sentence, like this one, sometimes the use of shorter sentences can add sizzle and shine to your dialogue and make it dazzle. Click to Tweet #DazzlingDialogue #amwriting

God’s Special Effects—Part III

I’m setting the stage to explain why I posted what I posted on Facebook during the Super Bowl. Last time, I discussed spiritual gifts and the word of knowledge. This time, I’ll discuss prophecy. It isn’t Bible or End Times prophecy. It’s God speaking. Any New Testament Christian can prophesy. (I Corinthians 14:31) Click to Tweet #GodsSpecialEffects #SpiritualGifts #SuperBowl2018

A prophecy given usually connotes a future event. When I began to stir up my gifts (as we are encouraged to do, see II Timothy 1:6), I used to “practice” hearing from God by watching a sports event…a baseball game, a football game, etc. Because I could see results of my practice quickly. I would ask the Lord about a batter. Will he get a hit, or make an out? Will this football team’s drive result in a touchdown, or will they have to punt? I’d see results quite quickly.

Change it up. Do something different. Be true to the POV character and who they are interacting with. Sometimes, life hits us with the unexpected. Put that in your dialogue. At times, something comes out of left field. We’ve never thought of it that way before. Insert these techniques into your dialogue to make the characters’ conversations sizzle, sparkle, and shine. Dazzle your readers with blazing exchanges. Click to Tweet #DazzlingDialogue #amwriting

God’s Special Effects — Part II

Last week, I talked about the wonders in the sky, and I called them God’s Special Effects. Because they are special. We don’t see them every day. There’s another kind of special effects God has—His people…people who follow Him, who follow His son Jesus. To them, He gives spiritual gifts. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, and they’re mentioned in I Corinthians and Romans. Click to Tweet #GodsSpecialEffects #SpiritualGifts

Dazzling Dialogue—Part V

The character’s vocabulary should be unique to each one. What kind of expressions do they use? Do they have an accent? Are there “favorite” words they like to use? Their syntax. All these things come together to create dazzling and sparkling dialogue. Click to Tweet #dazzlingdialogue #amwriting

Shooting stars, Aurora Borealis, super moons, blood moons, blue moons. These are some of God’s “special effects.” Those things that are unusual. Things we don’t see every day. They are also things we can’t manufacture. Signs in the sky are just part of God’s Special Effects. Click to Tweet #GodsSpecialEffects #amwriting

Dazzling Dialogue—Part IV

Conflict in scenes and tension between characters you’ve heard of before in writing. This time, we’ll talk about conflict in dialogue. Dialogue is the greatest way to portray conflict and tension in scenes and between characters. Argument and disagreements between even friends and allies helps to create sparkling dialogue. New Beginnings and Established Blessings—Part IV

Can you believe that the first month of 2018 is almost over? This is actually the fourth week of the new year already. Because New Year’s Day was a Monday, this is the fourth week of the month.
