Eternal Moments of the Day

I first posted this in February, but I think it bears repeating. This week, I’m re-blogging again because of another writer’s conference I’m involved in this weekend. Have a great week!

Surprises for Meghan’s Choice

Meghans ChoiceUntil last week, often I would feel that my novel, “Meghan’s Choice” would never be published. I wanted to give up. Sometimes I still feel that way. After all, with nine rejections (that felt like 90) in one year, it was difficult at times to not feel discouraged. But between March 2014 and May 2015, “Meghan’s Choice” was rejected nine times. Some of them really hurt, cutting like a knife. You can find those posts here on this blog. But I’m learning to get over those hurts as quickly as possible. And I’m wondering if the “rejection” pendulum is beginning to swing the other way. Click To Tweet That would be fabulous! #GodSurprises #NeverGiveUp #amwriting

Never Give Up

20151018_134545Sometimes I get cynical. Sometimes I think, “what’s the use?” Nothing ever changes — or does it? Last week, I was in for some surprises I believe God sent to encourage me to never give up, because you never know when suddenly, things begin to change. Click to Tweet #NeverGiveUp #GodSurprises

Breakout III – General Story Techniques

While I’m at a writer’s retreat, I’m not generating new material. This is a re-blog of a post from January of this year. From Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook, by Donald Maass. I highly recommend this resource to anyone wanting to learn the craft of writing. Have a great week.

breakout workbookThis week, we’ve been looking at Donald Maas’ Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook. I trust you have had your whistle whetted to learn more from this writing resource.

Yesterday, we looked at Lessons 13-24, Part II, Plot Development. The lessons covered everything from subplots, to adding tension in different ways, to how and when to use backstory, plot layering, and complications.

I’ll do the same today – pick out one point from each of the remaining lessons to encourage you to acquire the workbook and devour it. It will help you grow your novel and make it special. That’s what readers want and it’s what we writers want.

Today – I’ll be listing the lessons from Part III – General Story Techniques. This unit covers Lessons 25 to 34, everything from raising the stakes, complications, layering plot lines, subplots, turning points, conflict, and adding tension. I also talk about…

Please – Get Your Facts Straight – REBLOG

Thought I’d share this again. I’m healed gang, and the pain no longer hurts, only the disappointment at the failings of others who could have prevented this.

tear of grief

REBLOGGING this painful episode from January. Just want you all to know, I have totally healed from it. It was upsetting at the time, but you forgive, heal, and move on.

I’m actually at another writer’s conference this week. So, I’m not generating new material.

———————————————————————————————-

“All the winners are present. And there may be some here who didn’t win, but came very, very close.” I was at a writer’s conference over the weekend where an announcement was made. I’ve talked about it before, but I hate to use the real names, but many of you will know who I’m talking about, and what contest it was.

There were three publishing prizes given out, and three of us were there. But the announcer was wrong, as I was to learn just a minute later. As it happened, two winners were present, and I was the “close” one. But that first…

Writing Resource – Writing the Breakout Novel

For the next few weeks, I’ll be re-blogging some of my former posts having to do with writing resources. Donald Maass with his Writing the Breakout Novel book and workbook are excellent resources. I’d recommend the notebook over the book because you can write in it. But you might want to consider making photocopies of the worksheet pages to help you with your story. It’s a great resource.

Writing the Breakout Novel, by Donald Maas is another great resource for fiction writers. There is also a valuable workbook by the same name. I have used both in my training through CWG. Either resource could stand alone, because even though a lot of the material is the same, it’s not coordinated or formatted to correspond with each other. Example: Chapter One of the book is Why Write the Breakout Novel? Chapter One of the Workbook is on Character Development: From Protagonist to Hero.

Flipping My Sanguine Switch

shy girl behind momMy Aunt Juanita didn’t know I could talk until I was five years old. I always hid behind my mother’s skirts, just like this little girl. I was extremely shy, one of the symptoms of rejection syndrome, which at that time, I didn’t even know existed, let alone realize it affected me. Through the years, I’ve had to try to get past my fear of rejection and talk to people I didn’t know. A shy person or someone with Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD) finds it difficult to talk with people because they fear rejection. Click to Tweet #sanguineswitch #friendly #shyness

‘Bully’ for You — On My Soapbox

bully-1A young friend of ours recently was bullied again. It’s a sad state of affairs when a young girl can’t even be safe at school from classmates who feel the need for power. Because that’s what bullying comes down to, in most cases, I think. Click to Tweet  Our friend is in eighth grade. She was attacked by a boy from behind and a girl from the front. The boy was caught on camera and is now serving an ‘in-school’ suspension, where he can have no contact with other students at any time. He’s basically stuck in a room and his assignments are brought to him. #safeatschool #bullying

Writer’s Resource – the Emotion Thesaurus

Hello. Thought you’d a reblog this week. So it’s publishing today instead of Wednesday. Enjoy.

Emotion Thesaurus Emotion Thesaurus

I recently purchased The Emotional Thesaurus through Amazon. I haven’t explored it thoroughly, but from what I’ve seen, it’s going to be very helpful.

How do you write anger, joy, desperation, despair, or denial? Let’s look first at how the book is laid out. The emotion is at the top of a two-page spread. A definition is given, followed by a LOT of physical signals, in other words, describing what a person does who feels this emotion.
