We Did It Again—Part 2

Last week, I announced that Rose’s Redemption had made the Selah Awards finals. I now have the updated badge to “prove it.” (as if I had to—it’s on every list).

Writing contests are important in showing you where you’re at as a writer. When I first entered Meghan’s Choice (MC) in the ACFW Genesis contest back in 2014—she didn’t even make the semi-finals (the top seven entries)

I took all the criticism (HARD) but tried to incorporate what the judges said to improve my story and my writing. I’d learned from some of the best writers and I tried to learn well.

I got MC professionally edited, which helped a lot. Then, I got my courage up and entered more contests. I entered the last Operation 1st Novel—and made the semi-finals of that (one of ten).

I also entered Best Opening Paragraph and Best First Page and The Golden Leaf at the Advanced Novelist Retreat in 2015. It got 3rd in Best Opening Paragraph, and 2nd in Best First Page, and Honorable Mention in Golden Leaf.

That encouraged me. So, when I wrote Rose’s Redemption (RR) last year, (and 2017), I got it edited, and I entered contests. She did well! 1st place in BOTH Best Opening Paragraph and Best First Page. And 2nd in Golden Leaf. RR also made the finals of the Phoenix Rattler (ACFW Arizona).

Last year, I entered MC in three contests, and made the finals of two of them. So, this year, I entered RR in one contest.

If she doesn’t win, I may be somewhat disappointed, but I’ll survive it. Just knowing I made the finals cut is extremely satisfying.

Both Meghan’s Choice and Rose’s Redemption are available from Amazon. Here are the links if you’d like to check them out.

We Did it Again!

God is so very good. On Friday, I learned that Rose’s Redemption made the Finals of the 2019 Selah Awards! Meghan’s Choice did last year. It’s such an honor to make the finals because the Selah Award is very prestigious.

A contest of the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers’ Conference (BRMCWC), (one of the largest Christian Writers’ conferences in the country), the Selah Awards are given to the best published works from the year previous. Last year, because Meghan’s Choice was published in 2017, it made the 2018 finals.

So, we’re thrilled to have made the finals in the Western Fiction category, just as Meghan’s Choice did last year. I love entering the Selah Awards because I’m not traditionally published and I don’t have “best-seller” status. The Selahs don’t require that as some other contests do.

The awards will be given out on Wednesday, May 22nd. That’s some time to wait, but we’re very happy about it. Our third western novel, Hannah’s Hope is about halfway through the first draft. We hope to release it later this year. Stay tuned.

Both Meghan’s Choice and Rose’s Redemption are available from Amazon. Here are the links if you’d like to check them out.

Surprises for Meghan’s Choice

Meghans ChoiceUntil last week, often I would feel that my novel, “Meghan’s Choice” would never be published. I wanted to give up. Sometimes I still feel that way. After all, with nine rejections (that felt like 90) in one year, it was difficult at times to not feel discouraged. But between March 2014 and May 2015, “Meghan’s Choice” was rejected nine times. Some of them really hurt, cutting like a knife. You can find those posts here on this blog. But I’m learning to get over those hurts as quickly as possible. And I’m wondering if the “rejection” pendulum is beginning to swing the other way. Click To Tweet That would be fabulous! #GodSurprises #NeverGiveUp #amwriting

Never Give Up

20151018_134545Sometimes I get cynical. Sometimes I think, “what’s the use?” Nothing ever changes — or does it? Last week, I was in for some surprises I believe God sent to encourage me to never give up, because you never know when suddenly, things begin to change. Click to Tweet #NeverGiveUp #GodSurprises

To say a bit more in thanking Justina – nearly every award I have posted here is because of her. She’s nominated me and I’ll be doing her a favor and nominating her for something she doesn’t have yet – not this award, but another one! I’m happy to do that, too. She’s a great young woman, and I’m privileged to know her.

Process – Finally A Step Closer

Meghan's Choice in semi-finals
Meghan’s Choice in semi-finals

I finally got some good news on Sunday. Back in September I entered Operation First Novel from Christian Writers Guild. Even though the Guild has closed, Jerry B. Jenkins has promised to follow through with everything that began this year, and included Operation First Novel.

I got an email on Sunday. Meghan’s Choice made the semi-finals. Yeah! There are ten of us. After receiving three rejections, and you’ve gotten to read all about them, with a couple saying my book wasn’t ready for publication, when I knew it was – well this has done me a boatload of good. It makes it all worthwhile. Because I’ve been wondering about that. I’ve invested thousands of dollars in myself, developing my writing, learning, getting it edited, taking the Guild classes, and connecting with many other writers, both published and pre-published.

My Writing Process Blog Tour

Writing Process Blog TourI want to thank the talented Justina Luther for inviting me on this lovely blog tour. Check out her blog! She loves to write fiction, and she’s prolific. Visit her blog by clicking here.

I also want to thank everyone who has read, commented on, liked, and followed my blog! I love writing and sharing my thoughts with you. I hope you are uplifted and encouraged as you read, and maybe sometimes – challenged and inspired.

Without further ado, let the tour commence!

1) What am I working on?

I just completed my novel, Meghan’s Choice. I entered it into Operation First Novel, a contest from Christian Writer’s Guild. I’m also thinking about entering it into a contest sponsored by Westbow Press. I’m going to wait a bit to see if I make the cut on Op. 1st Novel before entering the Westbow contest.

Next week, I’ll be attending a large writer’s conference, where I will pitch the novel to editors and agents. We’ll see what happens. If necessary, I would say, towards the beginning of next year, I’ll know whether I have to self-publish it. If I do, I’ll probably do it POD. Remember that from about 3-4 posts ago?

I’m trying to blog more regularly and expand what is called my platform, and in so doing, expand myself to be a better person.

I also contribute once a month to When Readers Write, a group blog of some of us from a Christian Writer’s Guild Craftsman class. Continue reading “My Writing Process Blog Tour”
